Many Operating systems are available as VMware image files, these files contain all the data of the system. They can be opened by VMware Workstation.

How to use them

If you already have all the files

Sometimes all the files required are already included in the file you downloaded (being the case of Super Ubuntu, for example), so the only thing you have to do is:

  • Install VMware Workstation
  • Extract these files
  • Open the .vmx file! ("Ubuntu.vmx", for example)

If you only have a .vmdk file

  • Install VMware Workstation
  • Extract the file
  • Open VMware Workstation
  • Create a New Virtual Machine (File->New->Virtual Machine)
  • Click "Custom"
  • Click "Next" (2 X)
  • Select your Operating system from the list
  • Click "Next" (3 X)
  • Select the amount of RAM (note that it is better to keep this a low value, or you it may slow down your computer)
  • Click "Next" (3 X)
  • Click "Use an existing virtual disk"
  • Click "Browse"
  • Select the location of the .vmdk file
  • Click "Next"
  • Click "Finish"
  • You now have a new Virtual Machine ready to be powered on!
