Create a VistaPE Live CD

This tutorial explains how to create a Live CD of Windows Vista, with a script for WinBuilder called VistaPE.

Requirements

  • PC with Windows Vista
  • Windows Vista install DVD
  • WinBuilder and VistaPE (a link to both is given bellow)


How to do it

  1. Download Winbuilder and VistaPE (link to both programs here: Download WinBuilder + VistaPE)
  2. Extract the folder "Winbuilder" to some location like "C:\" (the program may give errors if it is runnning from a location with spaces in the folder path, like the desktop)
  3. Open WinBuilder and click "Paths", then, in "Source directory (%SourceDir%)" choose the location of the Vista DVD (D:\ or something like that)
  4. Click the "Play" button
  5. An ISO file (VistaPE-Core.iso) will be created in the folder "ISO", inside the WinBuilder folder (like C:\WinBuilder\ISO\VistaPE-Core.iso)

You can now test the .iso file on a Virtual Machine like VirtualBox or VMware Workstation (to see if it works), and later burn it to a CD or DVD (ImgBurn recommended)


Notes

  • The iso created (with the default settings) is less than 200 MB
