Beta testing SRUN: easier way to run/install software on Linux (Debian-Ubuntu)

May 08, 2009

.srun file

I have been working for the past weeks on SRUN (Still in BETA!)

What is it?
SRUN (Super Run) is a “new” way to run (and install!) software on Linux (only Debian, Ubuntu and Super OS supported at the moment). Think of it as a something similar to windows .exe files. (also similar to .dmg files for the Mac OS).

Possible uses:

  • Create multi-distro installers – example: Adobe_AIR_multi-distro-installer
  • Create “super-debs”superdeb of gufw (only for Ubuntu 9.04 / Super OS 9.04):
  • Create easy-to-use portable appsPortable XnView ALPHA (this creates a folder called “XnView_sandbox” in the same folder of the .srun file – this folder will contain all the settings of the portable XnVie, making this a true portable app!)
  • Create a launcher for any type of (Linux) script/executable

To get the SRUN framework (required to run .srun files), and to see screenshots, go to: http://hacktolive.org/srun

Any feedback/suggestions/ideas/code are wellcome!
